Linux, the New Botnet Command Center

...Botnets Have Evolved...

Scammers are perfectly aware of the advantages a Linux box has to offer to an illegal operation. As such, compromised servers running Linux are quite costly on the underground market. However, even if the number of Linux computers involved in Botnet attacks has increased, they are almost never used in the attack itself. The Botnet soldiers are still the systems running Windows, mainly because they can be exploited in batches, while Linux systems are considerably harder to break into. This could change in the future as the number of Linux desktop systems has consistently grown, pushed forward by user-friendly distributions that made their way online. Linux applications have vulnerabilities just like any other piece of software and with the rise in popularity, the risk of being exploited will go up as well.
